Crow Hill Trail - Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Crow Hill Trail is 3/4 mile loop trail at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. The trailhead is located on Silliman Road which can be accessed off of Wildlife Road. A warning: at the time of this review, Google Maps does not have the trailhead for this trail in the correct location. See the above map for its actual location. There is no fee to access the refuge grounds which are open to visitors from sunrise to sunset.

The best compliment that can be given to this trail is that it is well marked and easy to follow. It lacks scenic views.  True to its name, the trail includes a hill, but the elevation change is very manageable.

This trail takes you on a short walk through the woods. My hike took place during winter, but during the spring and summer, one would surmise the trail offers plenty of shade. On the day of my hike, wildlife sighted included cardinals, blue jays, and a rabbit.

The trail includes interpretive signs with information about plants and animals. Benches along the trail offer an opportunity to take a break, contemplate, or listen to the sounds of nature.

A sign greeting visitors to the trail notes a twenty foot high platform that offers views of Lake Texoma and the refuge. Unfortunately, the information on this sign is outdated as the platform has been removed.

This trail is a fine if you are looking for a short hike while exploring the refuge. It is easy and short enough that small children ought to be able to hike it. However, of all the trails at Hagerman, the Crow Hill Trail is the least favorite of this reviewer. For a better hiking experience, check out the Haller's Haven Trail or Meadow Pond Trail. Be advised that portions of the refuge are closed during the year for hunting. Check the refuge or Friends of Hagerman websites to find dates. Hagerman National Wildlife is a North Texas gem. Even if you opt to forgo a hike on one of the refuge's trails, it is worth your time just to drive through the refuge roads and admire the wildlife, especially the birds.
